Data Management, Data governance are the key factors which organization needs to consider while planning the storage. Keeping all these factors in mind Amazon offers different storage module:
In this blog we will discuss more about S3 and S3 Glaciers storage modules:
S3 (Simple Storage Service):
Amazon S3 module can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data in fast and reliable way. It can be used along with any of the compute modules offered by Amazon. This can also be integrated with on premises environment.
Security and versioning are also available with S3, this can be controlled using the bucket policy
You have complete control to make the data within S3 as public or private
Used Case:
In web –designing phase one of the requirements for web –designer is to store the users Profile picture. This can be easily achieved using the amazon S3 storage bucket.
Below are the steps to create S3 Bucket
Log on to amazon management console
Click on storage Module and Click on S3
Now Click on Create Bucket to create new S3 Bucket:
Define the name for the storage bucket, make sure this name should be unique, this name should not be in use by anyone else on cloud platform
Select the region where you want the data to be hosted, there is also option to migrate or copy the data from one S3 bucket to another S3 bucket, Click Next
In this screen you can configure options like versioning, and also you can enable logging for the storage.
You will also get an option to enable encryption, this is will encrypt the data stored within S3 storage, this is one of the good option to keep the data on cloud safe and secure, as many organization are concerned about the data security, apart from this you also get an option to enable monitoring using cloud watch service from amazon. Cloud Watch we will discuss more in details in other blog, once all option configured click next
In this Screen you will get an option to make data public or private within S3 storage, Once desired options are selected, please click Next
In Review Page , just verify all the details relevant to S3 Bucket and make sure all required options are configured, on this page if you want to change any configuration , can be changed using the edit option
Similarly from S3 management console, you can modify the properties of your bucket, see the below screenshot for reference:
S3 Glacier:
S3 glacier storage are used to store the data for long term retention, just consider storing the archived data for compliance and audit purpose, data which will not accessed frequently are stored win S3 Glacier storage. S3 Glaciers are less expensive storage
Used Case:
Company has requirement to store sales data. One year data should be available immediately, data older than one year only required for compliance and auditing purpose. In this Scenario we can save the data till one year on S3 storage and after that we can create life cycle to migrate the data to S3 Glacier for longer retention
Below are the steps to create S3 Glacier:
Log in to Amazon Console and click on S3 Glacier under storage Modules, click on cerate vaults, Click next
In this screen you can enable notification, once archival for data completes a notification will be triggered, for test purpose this can be avoided but in production scenario, this needs to be enabled
Review the settings and Submit
S3 Glacier is a good option to store data which will not use frequently, Organizations can store archived data or Tape Backup data on S3 Glacier
S3 Glaciers offers storage which meets Data Governance, long Retention requirement for organization
